There is a lot to do with fairy tales here in Hanau.

While the brothers were still alive, the Hanau manufacturer and patron Pedro Jung, incidentally a member of the Hanau People's Commission of 1848, donated 500 guilders for a monument to be erected (1853). On January 21, 1884, a monument committee was founded and reaffirmed the city of Hanau's privilege of being the site for a national monument to the Brothers Grimm, over Kassel, Göttingen, or Berlin. In 1888, eleven renowned sculptors were invited to submit a corresponding design. All models were publicly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in Hanau in January 1889. The public showed strong interest. A jury selected the winners, but a dispute soon arose over the first-place design. The city council and committee decided to ask Wilhelm Grimm's son, Herman Grimm, an art and literary historian in Berlin, for his opinion. He chose the design by Syrius Eberle, which had actually been placed third, and which was ultimately implemented.
