Significance: During the First World War, the Rotwand was a strategically important location along the front lines. Austro-Hungarian troops built positions, shelters, cable cars, and supply facilities here.

Supplies: A major challenge was supplying soldiers in high-alpine, impassable terrain – sometimes only possible via steep porter paths or with material cable cars.

The open-air museum is intended to be a memorial against the war and its far-reaching consequences.

During World War I, the Dolomites were the setting for the cruel mountain war (1915 - 1918), in which not only the Austro-Hungarian, German and Italian troops faced each other, but the soldiers also fought against the mountains, winter and hunger. Today, remains of camps, positions, command barracks, trenches and accommodation still bear witness to those times. Some of them tell of ingenuity and the attempt to develop technical solutions that would ensure survival.
