Similar to salmon, smelts swim into the rivers in late February to spawn in the sandy bottom. They were caught and traded at the smelt market.
Today, Lüneburg's most famous bar and restaurant mile is located on the Stintmarkt. The medieval houses, all of which are very well preserved, offer a fantastic and much-used photo backdrop.

Located directly on the Ilmenau River, it was a vibrant center of economic life for centuries. After trade shifted to land routes, the commercial district declined in importance, but not in charm.
Today, with its unique downtown location and diverse range of restaurants and shops, the "Water Quarter" is an attractive destination for Lüneburg residents and visitors alike.
