The Stintmarkt is located in the historic water district of Lüneburg. As the name suggests, the fish species "smelt" used to be traded here, a small, herring-like fish that was very popular in the Middle Ages.
Similar to salmon, smelts swim into the rivers in late February to spawn in the sandy bottom. They were caught and traded at the smelt market.
Today, Lüneburg's most famous bar and restaurant mile is located on the Stintmarkt. The medieval houses, all of which are very well preserved, offer a fantastic and much-used photo backdrop.

There are many pubs, some with outdoor seating and a lovely view of the Ilmenau. Opposite, on the other side of the river, you can see the historic Old Crane. The first crane was there in the first half of the 14th century. The current one dates from the late 18th century.

The “water district” is the historical core of the modern salt town.Located directly on the Ilmenau, economic life pulsated here for centuries. After the transport of goods was moved to the land route, the trading district lost importance, but not its charm.Today, the “water district” with its special inner-city location and the wide range of restaurants and retail outlets is an attractive attraction for Lüneburg residents and visitors to the city.hansestadtlueneburg.de
