Incredibly many colors and shapes. Also worth seeing for the layperson! Several thousand different types. But you have to consider the season. (Now at the end of March / AnfaApril) nothing blooms there. On the contrary: the garden is idle. The yolks still have to be brought back from the winter camp into the earth. Yes exactly: every year the dahlia tubers are in the
Autumn, after flowering (all !!) dug out and taken to winter storage.

Very nicely laid out. Sufficient benches to take a break. Picnicking is ideal on one of the meadows above the garden in the Volkspark. In the 15,000 square meter garden, visitors will find over 600 different types of dahlia with a total of more than 11,000 individual plants. The dahlia garden is a public garden and is operated by the Altona district office. The visitor can marvel at the diverse dahlias in different beds. In the museum bed of the dahlia garden there are a large number of antique dahlias and in the rest of the complex the dahlia garden has some world premieres as well as dahlia species named after celebrities
The dahlia garden is open daily from around mid-July until the first frosts around the end of October from 8 a.m. until dark. Travel by public transport
Metrobus line 2 to the Stadionstraße stop.
      Arrival by car
From the A7 motorway, take the Bahrenfeld exit and follow the signs to the stadium. The Dahliengarten is located on the corner of Luruper Chaussee and Stadionstrasse. Are the paths suitable for wheelchair users and walkers?
The path system consists of Grant gravel and is therefore only partially accessible for walkers and wheelchairs. Visitors should have no problems in drought / sunshine.

The dahlia garden was laid out in 1920 as part of the school garden in the southeast of the Volkspark. In 1932, based on a design by Horticultural Director Ferdinand Tutenberg, it was relocated to its current location, northwest of the Volkspark on Stadionstrasse. The head of the Altona horticultural department, Otto Schokoll, then carried out some redesigns in the years after World War II, in particular in the middle of the dahlia garden.Today the dahlia garden is an important part of the garden monument "Altonaer Volkspark", and it is one of the oldest and most important dahlia parks in Europe. On approx. 15,000 square meters, more than 700 different types of dahlia with more than 11,000 individual plants presented. Around 300,000 visitors enjoy the lush dahlia blossoms every year
