  • The dahlia garden was laid out in 1920 as part of the school garden in the southeast of the Volkspark. In 1932, based on a design by Horticultural Director Ferdinand Tutenberg, it was relocated to its current location, northwest of the Volkspark on Stadionstrasse. The head of the Altona horticultural department, Otto Schokoll, then carried out some redesigns in the years after World War II, in particular in the middle of the dahlia garden.Today the dahlia garden is an important part of the garden monument "Altonaer Volkspark", and it is one of the oldest and most important dahlia parks in Europe. On approx. 15,000 square meters, more than 700 different types of dahlia with more than 11,000 individual plants presented. Around 300,000 visitors enjoy the lush dahlia blossoms every year
