The Eschweger old town is dominated by the school mountain (Cyriakusberg), which carries the oldest building in the city, the 12th century Black Tower. Once stood here a Romanesque collegiate church and crowned a sacred Cyriac consecrated Kanonissenstift. Sophia (Abbess of Gandersheim), daughter of Emperor Otto II and Empress Theophanu, probably founded this monastery around the year 1000. When Günther von Arnsperg made the monastery a fortress in 1249, he had the church partially demolished and its stones used for the city fortifications , The pin, however, was rebuilt and existed until its dissolution in 1527.
