Dänholm was already of strategic importance in the Middle Ages.

This is also where the later Prussian Navy was born.

Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Dänholm's military use ended.

The Dänholm Naval Museum opened on the site of the historic Sternschanze on July 24, 1992. It was founded and refurbished in recent years jointly by the Dänholm Naval Museum Association and the STRALSUND MUSEUM. The Naval Museum celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022.

The STRALSUND MUSEUM's branch, characterized by volunteer work, is idyllically located on the small island of Dänholm between the mainland and the island of Rügen.

It can be reached via the Rügendamm.
