The city harbor with the longest outer pier in Europe and the striking pedestrian suspension bridge that connects the city harbor with the city center is simply very beautiful. In the days of the GDR, Sassnitz was one of the most important seaports. It represented the gateway to the Scandinavian countries. The former railway ferry connection from Sassnitz to Trelleborg in Sweden is known as the royal line. With a journey time of around four hours, it was the shortest direct ferry connection between Germany and Sweden. Entire passenger trains were loaded onto the ferry. The ferry station was connected to the much higher station via saw connections.
A new ferry port was built in Mukran for freight traffic. Broad gauge trains to the former USSR were also loaded there.
