“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to build “their” cross on this spot. (...) These crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who conquered death (…). The cross is part of our lives, just as it was part of the life of Jesus.

So I hope that many people ... visit the crosses, whether as places of silence and taking a breath before God, whether as places of community gathering, prayer and praise of God.

        Goldsteig Stage 17 North

        From Rachel to Lusen

Natural stairs lead to the summit cross of the Rachel, at 1452 m the second highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. Right at the beginning of the descent on the south-east side there is a wonderful view of the Rachel Chapel and the Rachelsee below. On the further way to the Felsenkanzel - again with a wonderful view - a detour to the Rachelsee is also possible. Narrow paths through mixed mountain forests then bring the hiker along quickly. Many of the once majestic spruces fell victim to the bark beetle, which has a positive effect: the now dead tree skeletons offer protection and breeding ground. Underneath, new forest is emerging in its most natural form.

After the jungle-like area at the Teufelsloch, there is a long ascent over the rocky steps "Himmelsleiter" to the Lusen summit (1373 m) with the geotope "Blockmeer am Lusen": One of the most impressive rock formations in the Bavarian Forest National Park, here granite blocks pile up to more than 200,000 m2 on each other. Today's stage destination, the refuge, is reached just below the summit.

Our tip for you: The Rachelsee is – just like the other two mountain lakes in the Bavarian Forest, the small and the large Arbersee – a relict from the Ice Age. There is a detailed information board and benches to rest directly on the lake.
