When the Eider Canal was expanded to the Kiel Canal (1887 to 1895), the canal level was lowered to about sea level. As a result, there was no longer any need for a reservoir for vertex posture. The Flemhuder See thus lost its purpose that was intended for it only a hundred years earlier. The lake was connected to the new canal and also lowered to sea level. The Eider continued to flow over a weir into the lowered Flemhuder See as before.

Beautiful path between Ringkanal and Flemhuder See. Interesting old Eider sluice with information boards at the transition to the NOK. Landwehr ferry directly on the way. Great starting point for cycling.
