'Carcross Desert' is located on the 'Klondike Highway'. The "desert" is a dune landscape with an area of approx. 2.5 km2. The dunes formed after the last ice age, after a large glacial lake dried up.
Efforts by the Yukon provincial government to place the dunes under protection failed due to resistance from the local population. Judging by the wheel tracks in the sand, the dunes are used for recreation.
