The Second World War created 30 million cubic meters of rubble in the city of Cologne. Spread across the entire city, but particularly in the inner city areas, there was so much rubble that it was difficult to remove. Some of it was reused in new buildings, but much of it was no longer usable. This material was collected at designated collection points and piled up into large mounds.
The rubble mountain in Longerich itself is wooded with beech trees, and the surrounding area alternates with open meadows and forest areas. In addition to the younger hill plantings, there is a mixed deciduous tree stand on the edge, some of which are over 80 years old.
