The old St. John's Church was destroyed in the Second World War. Various facilities are still housed here today. For example, the Protestant deanery of Hanau is located here. There is also a restaurant here and various events are held here. There is a great exhibition of paintings here at the moment.

The (old) Johanneskirche was built in 1658-1664 for the Evangelical-Lutheran community. Denominationally, Hanau was actually evangelical and reformed. However, when the reformed Counts of Hanau- Münzenberg died out in 1642, the inheritance passed to the Lutheran line of the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg. This also resulted in benevolent support from the new sovereign, Count Friedrich Casimir. Donations were received from many regions of Germany for the construction of the church, which is why the Elector of Saxony, Johann Georg II, was also present at the laying of the foundation stone.
The Johanneskirche shares the history of the war destruction with Hanau city center in 1945. In 1956-1957, including the preserved surrounding walls, a new multifunctional building for the Hanau city center parishes was built. In 2012, a steel construction was placed on the stump of the tower, which reproduces the former multi-storey curved tower hood and thus restores part of Hanau's historic city silhouette.
