A roundabout has taken the place of the former Spisertor in the St. Gallen city fortifications from the Middle Ages. The term "Spis" probably derives from the Latin word spicarium, which refers to a storage or grain warehouse. The Spisergasse, which runs from the gate to Bärenplatz, was an important trade route in the Middle Ages.
