The last preserved city gate of the former city wall of St.Gallen.
In 1566 the monastery of St.Gallen was separated from the city by a wall. So in 1570 the abbot had a separate gate built for the monastery. This has been preserved to this day.
The large stone carving adorning the east facade is the most striking feature of the gate. In the upper part, in addition to the coat of arms of the then Pope, the coat of arms of the old German Empire was carved into the stone. The middle part shows the coat of arms of Otmar, the first abbot and founder of the monastery. Gallus - the city's namesake - can also be seen with the bear. At the very bottom, two lying lions and a few intertwined ribbons adorn the relief.
Today the remand prison is located in the Karlstor. The building belongs to the cantonal administration.
