The Gallus Chapel in the monastery district was built in 1666/1667 on the ground floor of the prince-abbot's residence. The walls and ceiling of the almost square chapel are filled with 26 paintings from the life of Saint Gallus, presumably by Johann Sebastian Hersche. The entrance is flanked by larger-than-life statues of Saint Mauritius and Desiderius of Vienne.

According to legend, Gallus stumbled over a thorn bush here in 612 and saw this as a sign to stay. The first chapel was built in the 10th century. Today's chapel dates from 1671.
