Sonnsteinhütte with view of Traunsee

The Sonnstein Hut is located spectacularly high above Lake Traunsee on the Kleiner Sonnstein. The small hut belongs to the Traunkirchen mountain rescue service and is open on weekends and public holidays from Easter to October. The house is open every day during the Upper Austrian school holidays. The Sonnstein Hut was built between 1966 and 1968. At that time, tons of building materials were carried up the mountain on foot by helpers. The material cable car has only been in existence since 1979 and supplies the house with food and drinks. I always stop at the hut for a short rest. For a snack or a cool drink in summer. From the tiny terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view across Lake Traunsee to the striking Traunstein. It is not possible to stay overnight in the hut. The quickest way to reach the Sonnstein Hut is from the Siegesbach settlement south of Traunkirchen. From Ebensee you should expect a walking time of 2 ½ hours. The steep climb from Ludleben through the summit flank up to the hut requires surefootedness. It takes about 5 minutes from the hut to reach the summit of the Kleiner Sonnstein with its beautiful wooden cross.
