The Royal Theater is a Danish theater that has been located at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen since 1748.

After many renovations and additions, the building was both unsightly and impractical, and after a renovation in 1857, the debate about a brand new theater building arose. A competition was announced for the design of a new theater and the winning project was the building that now stands at Kongens Nytorv.

The foundation stone was laid on October 18, 1872, and the inauguration took place a few months late on October 15, 1874. However, the delay was in vain against the budget overruns, which led to a federal court trial against several ministers - the case ended in an acquittal. The decoration of the interior was initially unfinanced and largely had to wait until 1883, when the Carlsberg Foundation stepped in with financial support.

The theater houses a single stage, now called the Old Stage. There is space for around 1,400 spectators, and a separate box has been set up for the monarch.

The theater building itself was listed as a historical monument in 1985.
