The 20 km long estuary of the Baltic Sea connects the Szczecin Lagoon with the open Baltic Sea and creates a charming landscape characterized by bays that invites you on a tour of discovery.
Several bulges such as the Achterwasser, Spandowerhagener Wiek and Krumminer Wiek shape the appearance of the special flowing water. The river got its name from the river Peene, which flows near Anklam. With increased wind speeds, masses of water from the Baltic Sea are occasionally pushed into the Szczecin Lagoon. This means that strong currents can occur in the Peene Stream at times. All water sports enthusiasts should be prepared for rough weather.

Many different small marinas such as Freest, Kröslin, Peenemünde and Wolgast make the Peenestrom a popular sailing area. By the end of 2009, the Peene River was deepened as a lake waterway to 7.50 m. This enabled ships with heavy payloads to pass through. The Peenestrom is also home to many species of birds and fish. The great abundance of fish means that the river has developed into a preferred habitat for water birds such as sea eagles, herons and cormorants.
