Built in 1583, buried for a long time, exposed in 1920. The bastion (protruding part of old fortifications) is part of the Rees fortress at that time. The building, which was based on the bastion designs by the artist Albrecht Dürer, was laid out symmetrically from bricks in the shape of a crescent moon. In the approx. 70 cm thick outer walls facing the Rhine there are pincer-shaped loopholes with round holes for small-caliber guns and handguns. The bastion was reached through a Y-shaped corridor system of arched tunnels; access was from the city center. Two corridors that run diagonally towards each other used to secure the section between Rhinwicker Tor and Delltor. Due to the slightly sloping casemate floors, the guns could be removed more quickly and easily.Source: stadt-rees.de/tourismus-freizeit/sehenswuerdheiten/historische-stadtumwehrung/unterirdische-kasematte/kasematte-am-westring109 German war dead from World War II rest on this war cemetery.Source: kriegsgraeberstaetten.volksbund.de/friedhof/rees-kriegsgraeberstaette-westring
