Created in the 9th century by the founding of the monastery Kornelimünster, the town with its historic old town center is worth a detour from Aachen or on the way of the Vennbahn cycle path, which leads through the middle.

In 1906, more than 100 years after the dissolution of the Imperial Abbey, Benedictines (from the German Merkelbeek Abbey on the Dutch side of the border near Brunssum) were reintroduced to Kornelimünster. Initially, only three monks remained in Kornelimünster to oversee the construction of the new monastery. The new monastery building was occupied on November 21, 1908. The monastery was officially established on October 14, 1909.

In the years 814 - 817 a monastery was founded by Emperor Louis the Pious. The first abbot was Benedict of Aniane, who came from the Visigothic nobility. From here, until his death in 821, he carried out a monastic reform important to the history of Europe. The monastery on the Inde was later renamed "Kornelimünster", when the worship of Pope Cornelius (+ 12) began in the 253rd (?) century. The beautiful Gothic abbey church that stands here with the Kornelius Chapel, which was added later, dates back to the 14th century. The older monastic buildings were demolished after the abolition in 1802. The former state abbey buildings (fig. 13) are located behind the cathedral and now belong to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1906 Benedictines founded a new monastery in the village. The church of this new monastery was only rebuilt between 1951 and 1956 and stands on the road towards Oberforstbach. Today there is again a lively community with 8 Benedictines.
