    The Karlstor (1775/81) – Heidelberg 🚴‍♂️

The Karlstor is a historic building in the city of Heidelberg and marks the eastern end of Heidelberg's old town. It was built between 1775 and 1781 and replaced the Inner Upper Gate (Jacob's Gate), which was located at the current site of the building at Hauptstraße 231. The Karlstor was originally intended as a thank-you gift from the citizens of Heidelberg to Elector Karl Theodor. However, even during its construction, Heidelberg residents complained about the high costs. The structure is shaped like a Roman triumphal arch, with the Elector's coat of arms on the far eastern side of the gate, flanked by two lions. On the west side are portraits of Elector Karl Theodor and his wife. 🚴‍♂️
