The Château du Birkenfels is perched on a rocky outcrop in the Vosges Mountains and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. BIRKENFELS CASTLE was built in 1260 by BURKHARD BEGER, treasurer of the Bishop of Strasbourg. It remained in the possession of the BEGER family until 1532, and then passed to the MUNDOLSHEIM family until the French Revolution.

The castle fell into disrepair after the Thirty Years' War and became the property of the CITY OF OBERNAI. In 1984, BIRKENFELS was listed as a historical monument.
