The sundial was designed by the monks of the Neuburg Cistercian Abbey in the 18th century. As a feature that is unique worldwide, it not only shows the local solar time, but also the Italian, Babylonian, ancient times and the times of different regions of the world. The base of the clock, installed in the abbey in 1935, has Monseigneur Ruch's coat of arms on one side and an inscription in Latin, here in German, on the other side: "You go forward, just as the receding shadow indicates our hours. We are just dust and shadows.” Underneath, the date of the transfer to Mount Odile, 1935. On the reverse, the origin of the sundial: “From the ruins of Neuburg Abbey”.
