The Vancouver Peninsula has a long history. It was inhabited and used as a ceremonial site by First Nations people for thousands of years before becoming a British colony in 1858. It later served as a British military reserve and was established as a public park in 1888. In 1988, Stanley Park was designated a Canadian National Historic Site. With its natural surroundings and cultural elements that have evolved over time, it is the quintessential major urban park in Canada.
