The Autonomous Cultural Center Metelkova mesto (German: Autonomous Cultural Center Metelkova City), or Metelkova for short, is an autonomous center for politics and culture in the center of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the train station on the site of the former Yugoslav People's Army, which was stationed there in the so-called Belgian Barracks. After the Slovenian War of Independence and the subsequent withdrawal of the army, the area became a kind of free zone in 1993, an area occupied by artists, musicians, gallery owners, event organizers and social workers. After the shift to the right in 1991, the area was to be converted into a car parking zone. As a result, and as a result of demolition work beginning, the already quite devastated buildings were occupied on September 10, 1993.
