Bird watching platform with information hut for bird protection and a small rest area and car park. An ideal place to start your bike tour through the Nordstrand peninsula.

Here you are greeted on the island of Nordstrand. Very close to the farm shop with public toilets.

Visitors and residents approaching the Nordstrand peninsula by land via the dam near Hattstedt encounter a group of seven flags standing close together as if in greeting at the roadside. However, these flags do not wave in the wind, but are oriented differently against the usual wind direction. In addition, they are not made of soft material, but roughly hewn from different rocks such as granite, gneiss, limestone and sandstone and attached to masts made of larch wood that are around five meters high.

The sculptural group by sculptor Tom Müllers stages the contrasts. The solid material looks light here and yet resists the elements. Instead of waving fabric, the breath of eternity is blowing here in the form of the different rocks that have been stable for millions of years. In contrast, the masts are made of larch wood, which is much more perishable than stone, but thanks to its elasticity it reacts to the wind without breaking. The different rocks with their individual colors point like signposts in different directions and thus give the static group a playful dynamic.

The seven flags refer to the seven kings of Nordstrand. After heavy storm surges and loss of land, people began to build such dyked polders in the mid-17th century to protect themselves and to reclaim land from the sea. Just as the residents defy the forces of nature, the seven flags also brace themselves against the wind. They stand as a symbol for life with the sea, which brings with it joy and sorrow in equal measure.

A parking lot with a picnic table, a good view and information boards (covered, shelter when it rains).

A good way to start and / or end an extensive bike tour on the North Sea. There is sufficient space to park vehicles.

A nice parking lot to start a tour around Nordstrand, here is also some information on boards about the island, and a small viewing platform with a nice view. The good thing here is free parking 👍

The work of art “7 Flags for Nordstrand” is located on the Nordstrander Damm and was created in 2007 by the sculptor Tom Müllers. It consists of seven flags carved from various rocks such as granite, gneiss, limestone and sandstone and attached to around five-meter-high larch wood masts. These flags represent the seven polders of Nordstrand, which were reclaimed from the sea by embankment.

The polders were created after the devastating storm surge of 1634 to reclaim land and protect themselves from further storm surges. The seven flags symbolize the resilience and will to live of the Nordstrand population, who always defy the natural forces of the North Sea.

The art installation exudes great symbolic power by showing the contrasts between the lightness and the heaviness of the material used. While the stone flags symbolize a constant and eternal presence, the wooden masts react flexibly to the wind without breaking.
