Stans - Kälti (Stanserhornbahn middle station)
Of the old funicular railway to the Stanserhorn, only the first section from Stans to Kälti still exists today. The upper two sections were replaced by a cable car in 1975.
The railway from Stans to Kälti with the two faithfully reconstructed wooden carriages is the last remaining part of a system of technical significance that was built at the end of the 19th century with three sections and a gradient of up to 63% to access the Stanserhorn. The Stanserhornbahn was a joint project of the mountain railway pioneers and hotel kings Franz Josef Bucher-Durrer and Josef Durrer-Gasser and the company Bell & Cie. The first section that has been preserved is a classic funicular railway with Abt's siding, which is considered a prototype in terms of the use of the brake caliper system based on the Bucher-Durrer principle. The loss of the Hotel Stanserhorn due to a fire in 1970 and the replacement of the two upper sections of the funicular with an aerial cableway in 1975 has increased the importance of the first section as a testimony to an important era in the history of tourism in Central Switzerland. The cableway is maintained in an exemplary manner according to monument conservation standards.
