Piazza Walther is the center of Bolzano. Various markets take place here throughout the year, including the famous Christmas market. In the center of the square is the statue of Walther von der Vogelweide (c. 1170 – c. 1230), the poet and composer. After the annexation of Alto Adige, the square was named King Vittorio Emanuele III and the statue of the poet was removed. But after the Second World War the statue was repositioned and the original name returned.
