Great ride up to Rahu Saddle and down to Reefton. Beautiful galleries and cafés. A pie, a scone , a large flat white and a bottle of L & P will take you 80 kilometres against the wind to Greymouth! This section is steeped in gold mining history. Ended with delicious pub dinner at Woodstock pub, 2 for 1 on Tuesdays!

A fun start to the day white water rafting on the Buller river! After coffee and cake we followed the Makatiki river to avoid the highways. We cycled through the New Zealand bush with lots of ferns and streams to cross. Beautiful! We got to the pass, Maruia Saddle, and headed down the main road with the mountains in view all the way to the tiny village of Maruia.

Big day in saddle! Lots of grimacing on my part and lots of smiling on Paola's. Followed Great Taste Trail which connected to a silent secondary road / bike route all the way to saint Arnaud and the Nelson Lakes. Lots of sheep on the way! Quick stop in Lake Rotoroa and a steep climb on the Braeburn Track. Fun descent down crossing over streams. White water rafting tomorrow!

After a few days in Wellington we hopped on the ferry across the Cook Strait. The route coasted along the bays to Havelock, home of the NZ mussels. We then followed the main road, not the best road – some crazy drivers. Once in Nelson we followed the Great Taste Trail and the Old Railway line bike path all the way to Richmond which was perfect way to finish. Clouds in morning but finally a very sunny day!

Big day on the bike! We took the main highway and then connected to the Old Coach road, a 15 kilometre track which goes through the bush, really fun ride. Got supplies in Okahune, famous for Carrots, and had a picnic at the big carrot adventure park. Then, we had 60 kilometres of uninterupted nature, along the River Road and he Whanganui river, all the way to the Coolest campsite, the Flying Fox. You have to get a cart which crosses the river, the best!

One of the most famous day walks in New Zealand, the Tongariro Crossing crosses an active volcano. It's a suitable walk for most levels - quite steep towards the top. We saw lots steam coming out from the craters and beautiful lakes. Very very windy on the way up and then the surroundings opened up on the other side of mountain with much less wind. The final three kilometres are through the bush, a perfect ending. Would highly recommend, make sure to book shuttle bus before.

After a very sunny Christmas day we headed off towards Tongariro National Park. Views over Lake Taupo and Lake Rotoaira. The rain came in and we got to campsite drenched but in good spirits. Would recommend Discovery Lodge for accomdation. Tomorrow Tongariro Crossing hike!
