The small castle complex was used for a long time as a forester's lodge, until it was at the end of the Second World War in the middle of the inner German border. The forester lived there until 1954, after which the castle was a youth hostel for a while. In 1973 it was blown up due to the stricter border guard and was no longer accessible until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Meanwhile, the building fabric has been secured and the castle is again a popular hiking destination.

Hiking

The Altenstein ruins are definitely worth a jump again if you are hiking on the P16.
It is about 80 meters from the actual hiking trail.
There is also a refuge here where you can take a wonderful rest.

You can walk around the ruins and have some great views.

In front of the ruins there is a small information board with a lot of interesting information about these walls.
