Gardekirche or Church of the Resurrectionists, Vienna
The Guard Church or Church of the Resurrectionists in honor of the crucified Savior is located at Rennweg 5a in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse. The classicist central building with interior decoration in the form of courtly rococo (Josephine Baroque classicism) is considered one of the main works of the architect Nikolaus von Pacassi.
When the Kaiserspital moved into the former Dreifaltigkeitsspital on Rennweg, it was decided to build a hospital church. Planning took place in 1754, construction under Pacassi lasted from 1755 to 1763. In 1763 the church was consecrated. The church, open on three sides and clamped on one side, has a central, slightly longitudinally oval, almost circular cupola in solid masonry and a choir extension. In 1769, structural damage was repaired by Jean Baptiste Brequin with the master builder Nikolaus Peter Mollner, with the roof and facade being redesigned.
In 1782, Joseph II closed the hospital and billeted the Polish (Galician) life guards, and the church has since been named after the life guard barracks. In 1803 the oratory of the church was converted into an apartment. In 1890 the Imperial Hospital building was largely demolished and the remainder, together with the church, was handed over to the Polish resurrectionists in 1897. Since then there have also been masses in Polish in the church.
Along with the remains of the building, it was renovated and enlarged by Richard Jordan in 1898, with the bell tower also being raised. In 2001, to commemorate the three visits to Austria by Pope John Paul II, a monument depicting him was erected on the side of the church portal.
