During the Thirty Years' War, the Wall secured the city of Emden as the only place in East Frisia to be occupied by foreign troops. After the transition of the region to Prussia in 1744, the Wall lost its defensive function and was gradually transformed into a recreational area since about the second half of the 19th century.
