During the Thirty Years' War, the wall protected the city of Emden as the only town in East Frisia from being taken over by foreign troops.
After the region was transferred to Prussia in 1744, the wall lost its defensive function and was gradually transformed into a local recreation area from around the second half of the 19th century.
