The institute was founded in 1949 by Richard Scherhag in Berlin Dahlem. Today the institute is located on the Fichtenberg in Berlin Steglitz. The institute buildings include an old water tower, which was originally converted into a weather tower for the university weather service, which operated until 1994. Among other things, the tower houses a weather station where students have the opportunity to work on weather observation and practical student projects. This also includes the assignment of names to high and low pressure areas.
