Just outside the gates of Cartagena's old town stands an imposing fortress: Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. It was built shortly after Cartagena's founding to protect the new colonial port city, which was stockpiling gold and silver, from pirate and privateer attacks. Over the centuries, it became clear that this was no unnecessary luxury.
