The neo-Gothic church was built in 1898 as part of the expansion of Altona's urban area to the west, based on a design by Fernando Lorenzen and based on a Greek cross plan. A plot of land with the highest urban planning presence served as the location on a traffic junction on the Hohenzollernring, which was generously proportioned in a manner typical of the time. The richly decorated brick church has since been rebuilt several times. Today it is in the middle of the popular district of Ottensen.

The Kreuzkirche was built in 1898 by the Hamburg architect Fernando Lorenzen in a neo-Gothic style. It was built of red brick in combination with glazed stones and is also reminiscent of the brick Gothic tradition with the copper roofs. The 67 m high tower is surrounded by eight smaller towers, which makes the church one of the churches in Hamburg with the most towers.

The Kreuzkirche at the intersection of Behringstrasse and Hohenzollernring in Hamburg-Ottensen is a neo-Gothic building from 1898 that is now used by the Evangelical-Lutheran Tabita parish. Occasionally there are concerts.

In 1889, the once independent town of Ottensen became part of the Holstein town of Altona, which grew steadily over the years. In 1896, plans were approved for expanding the residential areas to the west, which also envisaged a new church building at a prominent urban location at the intersection of two future streets. This was designed by Fernando Lorenzen, who oriented himself to the Wiesbaden mountain church of his teacher Johannes Otzen.

Construction began in 1897, and the inauguration took place after a very short construction period on November 22, 1898. The first pastor of the church was Amandus Weinreich, who had also overseen the construction of the church.

The small Kreuzkirche is a typical town church from the Wilhelminian period: built of red brick in combination with glazed stones to emphasize the building details and with copper roofs, it takes up the tradition of brick Gothic. It is a central hall church with a cruciform floor plan and a central 67 m high crossing tower.

There are numerous small decorative elements on the church, such as wrought iron gargoyles, bud-like capitals and a mosaic in the tympanum of the portal. The church stands on a small, landscaped traffic island at the intersection of the busy Behringstrasse and the Hohenzollernring. It was originally the first completed building in the new quarter and stood alone in a meadow.

During the First World War the original copper roof was removed for armament purposes, the air raids in the Second World War only destroyed a few windows; the building itself remained largely undamaged.

In the years 1993 to 1998 and 2001 to 2007 extensive repairs were carried out by Joachim Reinig's architectural office, which were not completed due to a lack of funding. The necessary remaining costs were estimated at more than €1.2 million, even with secure financing, the renovation can only be completed after 2017.
