The “Goethe rock”, designated as a natural monument, consists of several rock groups on a mighty “quartz reef” belonging to the Bohemian pile. The outcrop is about 400 m long and up to 15 m high. Because of its strength, the vein quartz was quarried in several quarries, the largest of which was in operation until the 1960s.

At the southern end of the quartz train, a marked junction leads from the blue hiking trail to the inconspicuous Goethe stone. On this boulder there is a memorial plaque, which the police advisor, amateur scientist and mineral collector Joseph Sebastian Grüner from Eger (1780–1864) put in honor of the visit of the Grand Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Marija Pawlowna Romanowa (1786–1859) let.
