A wooden church was built here around 550 AD, when there was no settlement on the northern bank of the Rhine.
Parts of the current church (front wall) date back to 799. The choir area dates from the 13th century.
The name Burg comes from the Roman fort that stood here in Stein am Rhein "Vor der Brugg" since 293 AD. The construction of the fort replaced the Roman village on the site of today's Untereschenz. By the way, there is also a bunker there.
