The monumental Kokersluis was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century when the Reitdiep started to silt up. For the ever-larger ships, the province decided to dig the Eemskanaal. After that, it was possible to regulate the Reitdiep with a new lock at Zoutkamp and the discharge sluices were no longer necessary.
