The buildings at Hafenmarkt 4-10 in Esslingen am Neckar are considered to be the oldest connected row of half-timbered houses in Germany. They were all built between 1328 and 1331.
Description
The oldest row of half-timbered houses in Germany shows the complete development of a medieval alley - even if house number 6 has since been plastered and has different windows. In over 600 years, the residents have of course repeatedly changed structural details. But supporting structures and basic elements from the time of construction have been preserved here too and bear witness to the true age of this house. The ground floor of the houses also housed workshops and shops. The living areas with bedrooms and servants' quarters were on the first floor. Mighty vaulted cellars connect the houses.
The houses were actually supposed to be demolished in 1982. It was only at the last minute that scientists recognized the value and age of the houses. House number 2 was already destroyed at this point. It was then reconstructed and must therefore be classified as a new building. The demolition of the house had one good thing: it revealed the ancient construction of the neighboring house. This was the only reason why the entire row of houses was examined more closely. Dendrochronological examination proved that all of the houses were built between 1328 and 1331.
