The opera house was opened in 1907 as the Central Theater. Initially, it was used as a variety theater, from 1922 it was then a pure operetta stage. After the destruction in the Second World War took place on 21 December 1950, the reopening under the name Maxim Gorky Theater. After a fire, the cause of which was probably arson, on May 20, 1990, had destroyed much of the stage space, it was renovated for 120 million DM and reopened on October 4, 1997 as a theater of the state capital.
The theater was originally the city villa of industrialist Ferdinand Friedrich August Klusemann and was sold in 1906 to the Harmony Society. This built them to a society house, held in the dance, club evenings and concerts. From 1945, the house was used as a temporary venue for the theater and renamed Magdeburger Kammerspiele in the early 1960s. After 1990, the house was initially an independent theater with a permanent ensemble under the name "Free Kammerspiele". In May 2003 it was closed for a major refurbishment; During the conversion period, the former Reichsbank served as a venue at the cathedral. In September 2005 the reopening took place, now as "Schauspielhaus" of the merged Theater Magdeburg.
Until 1944, the most important theater in Magdeburg was the Stadttheater. Other once belonging to the urban stages theater were the Victorian Theater and the Wilhelm Theater.
In 2009, General Manager Tobias Wellemeyer was awarded the German Critics' Prize.
Since the 2009/2010 season, Karen Stone has directed the Theater Magdeburg as General Director.
