The Berlin-Potsdam-Magdeburg Railway Company built the Potsdam – Magdeburg railway line in 1846/47. However, the lift bridge over the Elbe was not completed, so that the trains ended in Magdeburg-Friedrichstradt (later Brückfeld) station in the early years. There was no continuous train traffic on the bridge until August 19, 1848. The 220 m long bridge, also known as the Buckau railway bridge, spans the Stromelbe at an angle of 62 ° 200 m south of the cathedral rock.Initially, the structure had nine openings, each around 25 m long, which were spanned by iron truss superstructures with the roadway underneath. A swing bridge for shipping had been installed on the third pillar. Since the bridge was becoming an obstacle for the growing Elbe shipping, the structure underwent a major change in the decades that followed.

It is definitely worth taking a look at and from the lift bridge. Various events (dinner, music, etc.) are also regularly held there! 👍
