Like so many buildings in Zittau, the St. John's Church is a new building from the period after the Seven Years War. The construction started in 1766, but due to static problems the construction was delayed. Preussen's chief building director Karl Friedrich Schinkel was added, who finally completed the construction with his Zittau pupil Carl August Schramm. Since 2015, the doors of St. John's Church have been open again to visitors and the community following extensive interior renovation.
The observation tower is also unique, as Zittau's tower keeper lives at the top.
