Like so many buildings in Zittau, the St. John's Church is a new building from the period after the Seven Years War. The construction started in 1766, but due to static problems the construction was delayed. Preussen's chief building director Karl Friedrich Schinkel was added, who finally completed the construction with his Zittau pupil Carl August Schramm. The south tower of the church can even be climbed. From the top you have a great view of the unique old town of Zittau. Church and tower are open all year.

The first mention of the church dates back to 1291. The predecessor building was completely destroyed in July 1757 during the Seven Years War. In the years 1766-1804 the church was rebuilt in Baroque style. Due to static problem only the north tower was equipped with a top, the second tower remained unfinished, which makes the church unique.

The St. Johannis Church was completed in 1837 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Next to the town hall, it is the most dominant building in the city center of Zittau.
The eventful history, the distinctive architecture, the magnificently designed interior and the valuable organ are impressive in every respect. St. John's Church offers a festive space for church services, concerts, exhibitions and other events.
Since 2015, the doors of St. John's Church have been open again to visitors and the community following extensive interior renovation.
The observation tower is also unique, as Zittau's tower keeper lives at the top.
