Weener is the cultural and economic center of the Rheiderland. At the same time, like Ditzum, which belongs to the municipality of Jemgum, it stands out with its harbor.

In past centuries, Weener had a port on the Ems and was on the left Semester trade route to the south Münsterland. The city was mainly known for its livestock and horse markets and exported agricultural merchandise. In the meantime, the port as a goods transfer point and the cattle trade no longer play a role. Economically Weener is characterized by the retail trade for the Rheiderland region, agriculture and tourism. In the city there are also individual industrial companies (Wikipedia).
