    GOOD BY TRADITION

The Meyer family has kept the shipbuilding company on course for around 225 years - now in the seventh generation. As in the early days, the shipyard is still in Papenburg. This is where the founder of the shipyard, Willm Rolf Meyer, began building small wooden sailing ships in 1795. In the decades and centuries that followed, MEYER WERFT repeatedly demonstrated a pioneering spirit. We expanded our production and shipyard halls and in 2018 delivered the world's first cruise ship to be powered by low-emission liquefied natural gas. Today, MEYER WERFT is regarded as the technology leader in cruise ship construction.

We know that we owe this success primarily to our employees and the partner companies that work for us. That's why we continue to ensure that we work together in a spirit of partnership - and bear responsibility for the people, the region and the environment.

      History of the shipyard

Since its founding at the end of the 18th century

The shipyard was founded on January 28, 1795[7] by Willm Rolf Meyer, whose descendants now run the company in the seventh generation, as a wooden shipyard on the Papenburg main canal.

By 1920 there were about twenty shipyards in Papenburg. Only the Meyer shipyard existed until the 21st century. The company began building steel-hulled ships with steam engines in 1872 on the initiative of Joseph L. Meyer.
