Just a short walk from Castle Augustusburg in Brühl, on the edge of a secluded grove, a charming sight is the hunting lodge Falkenlust, one of the favorite hunting castles of the Cologne Elector and Archbishop Clemens August (1700 / -61).
In only a few years between 1729 and 1737, one of the most intimate and precious creations of the German Rococo was created according to the plans of the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés.

The choice of the site for this hunting lodge was determined by the trajectory of the herons, the preferred prey hawks of falconry. On the flight from their clumps in the Brühler Schlosspark to their fishing grounds in the Altrhein area near Wesseling, they were "stained" by the passionate hawk-hunter Clemens August and his hunting party with trained hawks.

After the hunting pleasures, the courtly society gathered for supper and play in the preciously furnished interiors of Schloss Falkenlust. Among the completely preserved rooms stand out the lavishly equipped cabinets, which the young Mozart admired as early as 1763.

Since 1974, the privately owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia hunting lodge Falkenlust is open to the public as a museum.

In the outbuildings the falconry is presented in a vivid and informative way. The life and work of the falconers shows faithfully furnished Falknerstube.

From 1730, a chapel dedicated to Maria Aegyptiaca was built in the Falkenlustbusch near the hunting lodge. It was designed by Peter Laporterie in the form of an astonishing hermit grotto with shells, minerals and crystals.

Just a short walk from Augustusburg Palace in Brühl, on the edge of a secluded forest, lies the Falkenlust hunting lodge, one of the favorite hunting lodges of the Cologne Elector and Archbishop Clemens August (1700/-61), another attractive attraction.

In just a few years, between 1729 and 1737, one of the most intimate and precious creations of the German Rococo was built according to the plans of the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés.

The choice of building site for this hunting lodge was determined by the flight path of the herons, the favorite birds of prey for falconry. On the flight from their nests in the Brühl palace park to their fishing grounds in the Old Rhine area near Wesseling, they were "pickled" by the passionate falcon hunter Clemens August and his hunting party with trained falcons.

After the hunting fun, the courtly society gathered for supper and games in the sumptuously furnished interiors of Falkenlust Castle. Among the fully preserved rooms, the lavishly furnished cabinets, which the young Mozart admired as early as 1763, stand out.

The Falkenlust hunting lodge, which was acquired from private ownership by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, has been open to the public as a museum since 1974.

In the outbuildings, falconry is presented in a vivid and informative way. The falconers' living and working methods are shown in a falconer's room furnished true to the original.

In 1984, Falkenlust Castle, together with Augustusburg Castle, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as an example of a uniquely preserved Rococo work of art in Germany.

From 1730 onwards, a chapel dedicated to Maria Aegyptiaca was built in the Falkenlustbusch in the immediate vicinity of the hunting lodge, which was designed by Peter Laporterie in the form of an astonishing hermit's grotto with shells, minerals and crystals.
