The dam that holds back the water of the Froschgrund lake is 18 meters high and 350 meters long. The earth wall protects the city of Coburg from the flood. The lake is also called Schönstädtspeicher.

Nice flat loop around the lake. Well suited for elderly people etc. for a digestive walk after dinner in the inn.

The Froschgrundsee, also called Schönstädtspeicher, is a flood retention basin to protect the city of Coburg in Bavaria from the floods of Itz, Effelder and Grümpen. It is located in the area of the former municipality of Froschgrund in Upper Franconia, which was incorporated into Rödental in 1978, and when flooding occurs, one third protrudes into the Sonneberg district in Thuringia, i.e. into the GDR area before the fall of the Wall. The planning therefore required agreements with the GDR and was viewed as an "intra-German model project". [1] The Froschgrundsee was put into operation in 1986 after four years of construction and costing 43 million DM.

Cozy round with a lot of information boards about the local creatures. Is really nice to walk.

A beautiful path, approx. 2.5 km long, leads around the Froschgrundsee. It is easy to walk on and there are parking spaces on both sides.

Very nice out of season. Often crowded in season.
