A tour of Sintra, for which you should definitely take a whole day. There are an incredible number of palaces and gardens to discover, my personal highlight is the Quinta da Regaleira. In addition to hiking boots, you should also bring a credit card, as the entrance fees are sometimes steep.

The last stage of HW 5 is already on - on today's almost 15 kilometers, wonderful views and a few meters in altitude are waiting for you. You start in Friesenhofen and walk from there to the private Rimpach Castle, where you turn east. Through the forest you will then reach the hamlet of Ellmeney with the pretty mountain chapel.Afterwards, the path begins to climb more and more and you continue over the Bärenbühl to the Mount of Olives. A wide alpine pasture welcomes you there, where cows graze in summer. On the Steinbergele you will then exceed the 1,000-meter mark. Along the shady forest path, beautiful views are visible in some places and the wooden Zengerles chapel is the ideal place for a short rest. But the highest point of this stage is still a long time coming and that's why you continue to climb uphill. The hammocks on the picturesque Schletteralpe invite you to relax shortly before your destination and then you tackle the last one and a half kilometers. Then you made it on the Black Ridge: At 1,118 meters you reach the official destination of the Black Forest-Swabian-Alb-Allgäu-Weg and can enjoy a fantastic panorama from the observation tower. From above you can look back over the hills of the Allgäu, the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest - the perfect end to your long-distance hike.

You leave Leutkirch im Allgäu with its winding streets at the beginning of this stage towards the south. You follow a side road to Herlazhofen and walk past typical farms and wide fields. After Herlazhofen, it is worth taking a detour to the picturesque Hinterweiher, which borders a small moor. On its banks it is great to take a break and sunbathe.Back at HW 5, it goes into the forest and where the trees are thinning again, the thirst-quenching tribe is waiting for you: For a small fee you can help yourself to the drinks and then enjoy the view from the bench. Afterwards, forests and meadows alternate until you reach the next lake. At Badsee you will also find a swimming pool with sunbathing lawns and a kiosk that invites you to cool off.The long-distance hiking trail then leads you past Beuren through a gently undulating cultural landscape. In the forest you can take a look at the wet meadows of the Rimpacher Moos ’before you turn off to Friesenhofen. There you can spend the night in the Landgasthof Goldenes Kreuz.

Bad Wurzach is the starting point for the 15th stage of the Black Forest-Swabian-Alb-Allgäu-Weg. Past the castle and the monastery square, walk out of the city and walk steadily uphill. You leave the Maxhof behind you, cross a forest and then reach the road to Wengenreute. The road leads you through the village and then you turn south to get to Gospoldshofen. You cannot miss the Sennerstüble there, because home-made cheese is served on the plate in the original stop. Strengthened, you then go up to the 791 meter high Wachbühl, from which you have a fascinating view of the Alps. From the summit you hike down to Brunnentobel and then climb back up to Zeil Castle. The spacious complex offers a lot to discover with the courtyard garden, the St. Maria church, a restaurant and a viewing platform. This is followed by the descent into the valley of the Wurzacher Ach, which you cross. Along the Eschach, the path finally leads you to Leutkirch im Allgäu, where you spend the night.

You start the 14th stage in the beautiful Bad Waldsee, which you leave to the east. First on Wurzacher Straße and then along the edge of the forest you hike back to the official HW 5, which you left here the day before. Over open fields it goes to Hittelkofen, where an ascent to the Haisterkircher ridge is waiting for you.At the highest point of this stage you will find the beautiful St. Sebastian chapel in the middle of the forest, which offers you an idyllic place for a rest. From the chapel the path runs down to Graben, where a wonderful view of the Alps opens up. After enjoying the panorama, you walk down to the plain of the Wurzacher Ried.At the edge of the nature reserve, follow the route to the Riedschmiede, where you then turn onto the hiking trail through the Ried. On footbridges and wooden planks, you pass the Upper Swabian Peat Museum and then along the banks of the beautiful Riedsee. Towards the end of the day's stage you pass the Bad Wurzach outdoor pool and the small park lake, in which the surrounding trees are reflected. In Bad Wurzach you have reached your today's destination and can still visit the castle park or the nature conservation center.

This stage of HW 5 officially ends in Hittelkofen, but there is no overnight accommodation there. That is why I recommend a little detour to Bad Waldsee, which is not on the Black Forest-Swabian-Alb-Allgäu-Weg, but has various hotels and inns. After a night in Steinhausen, you initially hike southwards and pass the French grave. From there you look back at the towers of the wonderful pilgrimage church that you visited the day before. Between forest and fields, the route takes you past Buchbühl and on to Winterstettenstadt. Outside of the village you can explore the remains of the former Schenkenburg and take a break. This is followed by a section through the colorful landscape of Upper Swabia. You pass Oberessendorf and smaller hamlets with traditional farms. After 21 kilometers, turn off the marked HW 5 and march on the edge of the golf course to Bad Waldsee, your destination for today. When the weather is nice, you can jump into the city lake there or stroll through the romantic city center.

At the beginning of this stage of the Black Forest-Swabian-Alb-Allgäu-Weg you leave the center of Biberach in a south-westerly direction. You will pass the beautiful city park and the White Tower. On the outskirts, the renatured banks of the Rotbach await you, where you can even meet storks.Following the stream, it goes slightly uphill past a quarry to Mittelbiberach. The Rotbach still shows you the way and accompanies you through the colorful cultural landscape. After ten kilometers you can take a break at the dark shimmering oil pond before you enter a wide forest area. There you cross a road and then hike up a hill from which you can enjoy a wide view at the edge of the forest. You can also see the towers of the impressive Steinhausen pilgrimage church, which you will reach a short time later. Only a few steps away from the “most beautiful village church in the world” is the Landgasthof zur Linde, where you will be staying today.

After a night in Uttenweiler, the eleventh stage starts with a gentle climb up to the wooded Hipfelberg. Further south you then hike through the place Ahlen, where there is a nice resting place with a water source on a hill. It continues in a steady up and down through the hilly cultural landscape.Through Attenweiler you reach the extensive Burrenwald, in which there are several ponds. For example, you can take a short break by the water at the little Hermannsteich. Then you leave the forest behind you and you come to a road that you follow to Biberach Airport. The foothills of your stage destination appear in front of you and you hike down over the panoramic Gigelberg to Biberach. In the picturesque old town you will find a large selection of places to stop and overnight.
