The former Romanesque monastery was founded in the 11th century and is one of the most important examples of medieval architecture in Germany. It was originally a Premonstratensian monastery and developed over time into a central religious and cultural site in Magdeburg. Today, the complex is no longer used as a monastery but houses the Magdeburg Art Museum as well as a concert and exhibition hall. Particularly well-known are the well-preserved Romanesque cloister and the impressive architecture of the church.
