Otto von Guericke (1602 to 1686) is considered one of the most famous sons of Magdeburg. He was Mayor of Magdeburg from 1646 to 1676, diplomat and naturalist. He is one of the two Ottos to whom Magdeburg owes the title Ottostadt. In his honor, the Magdeburg City Council had a memorial erected in 1907 on the square "Beside the Hauptwache".
